Primary Sources of Early Modern Japanese Literature and Religion

A selection of ten Japanese books displayed on a table.

The Primary Sources of Early Modern Japanese Literature and Religion Collection features a rich selection of historical texts in Japanese literature, religion, and material culture. Dating back to the 17th century, the materials include encyclopedias of material culture, religious texts, and commentaries central to Buddhist studies, literature, and history.

These rare and fragile volumes provide insight into Buddhist and Confucian thought transmission to Japan. The collection also holds several works that could be used to investigate material culture through encyclopedias and the process of knowledge transfer from the Asian continent into Japan during the Early Modern period. Scholars of religious studies, history, literature, and East Asian languages will find this collection invaluable for research and preservation efforts.
