Dr. Robert C. Johnson III Papers
As a graduate student at Washington University in Saint Louis, Dr. Johnson helped form the Association of Black Collegians, which spearheaded changes to the institution’s structure and environment. He led student protest movements that resulted in the creation of a Black Studies program, increased enrollment of students of color, increased financial aid for students of color, the hiring of Black administrators, professors, and staff, the desegregation of work roles and staff positions, the establishment of a community-based research and service organization (the Institute of Black Studies), and changes in the research protocol on African Americans.
The Dr. Robert C. Johnson III Papers consist of 22 films he shot documenting Black student life and organizations at WashU and associated places, including Nigeria and Jamaica, from 1970-1972.

Viewable copies of Dr. Johnson’s films are presented here with highlights and descriptions to help provide a detailed guide to the footage. Each page includes a form for viewers to provide any identifying information about the people featured in the films. Names, memories, and connections all provide valuable information to enhance the films for research use.
Cataloging the Robert C. Johnson Films
Robert C. Johnson III donated his collection of twenty-two 8mm film reels to the Julian Edison Department of Special Collections in 2024. Identifying and cataloging descriptions for each film were among the larger tasks in preserving the Dr. Robert C. Johnson III Papers, a process shared in the “Cataloging the Robert C. Johnson Films” article.
