Digital Projects in Music

Special Collections from the Gaylord Music Library include several digital projects, exhibitions, publications, and sheet music collections.

Projects & Publications

• Art and Music | This scanning project was a joint effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections and the Missouri Historical Society Library.
• The Bizet Catalogue | The Humanities Digital Workshop at WashU manages the Bizet Catalogue, which seeks to provide full historical documentation of Bizet’s work as a composer and transcriber by listing Bizet’s compositions and providing essential information about their history and content.
• Das Deutsche Lied | This scanning project was a joint effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections and the Missouri Historical Society Library.
• Scanned editions of The Herald of Music | This scanning project was an effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections
• Images of Ancient Music | This database contains images related to the music of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as other images connected to Greco-Roman antiquity. It also includes images of ancient and modern instruments, places, and objects related to the broader ancient Greco-Roman world, as well as some recordings of ancient Greek and Roman literature read aloud. Project director: Tim Moore, John and Penelope Biggs Distinguished Professor of Classics.
• The Impressario scanned editions | This scanning project was an effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections.
• The Intermezzo : a musical monthly | Five issues from Volume 1 (Apr 1905 – Jan 1906) of The Intermezzo. This scanning project was an effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections.
• Kunkel’s Musical Review | This scanning project was a joint effort of the Gaylord Music Library Special Collections, the Missouri Historical Society Library, the LaBudde Special Collections, Miller Nichols Library, St. Louis Public Library, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
• Music & Racial Segregation in 20th Century St. Louis: Uncovering the Sources | St. Louis, notorious for its history of racial segregation and widely celebrated for its vibrant musical heritage, provides a significant test case for questions about the connections between music and segregation in urban life. The collection is a database of archival sources exploring key moments in the history of music and segregation in mid-20th century St. Louis. Project director: Patrick Burke, Associate Professor of Music.
• Music World | This collection examines three digitized issues from Volume 1 (May – September 1893) of The Music World. The Gaylord Music Library uploaded the Music World collection and made it available through the Internet Archive.
• Musical News | This collection looks at various digitized issues from Volumes 1 and 2 (Volume 1, number 1 to Volume 2, number 3, spanning September 1897-November 1898) of Musical News.
• Musicians’ Necrology (1998-2012) | Gaylord Music Library Necrology project contains musicians’ death notices and obituary locations. Since death notices often contain conflicting dates, ages, and name forms, all are reported.
• The Reporter of Strassberger’s Conservatory of Music | This digitized collection showcases Volumes 1-27 (1899-1929) of The Reporter of Strassberger’s Conservatory of Music publication.

• Sheet Music from World War I | A sortable list of music from WWI; includes links to downloadable files.
