Data Instruction

Students sit at computer terminals during an instructor-led Data Services GIS Workshop.

DataLab Workshops

DataLab is a collaboration between Data Services, TRIADS, Becker Medical Library, TechDen, and Digital Intelligence & Innovation Accelerator (D12) that provides a wide range of workshops, from understanding data to working with data tools. These workshops are open to all WashU affiliates and are held in the fall and spring semesters.

Data Services at the Libraries offers several opportunities for groups, teams, departments, or labs to receive workshops in a broad array of areas. Reach out to Data Services to discuss developing a customized workshop, or complete a Data Services Instruction & Workshop Request Form.

Data Savvy Courses

Data Savvy is a set of self-paced courses delivered through Canvas. It complements semester-length courses taught at Washington University in St. Louis. These courses do not replace full-term courses offered by WashU schools and departments.

Data Savvy Courses are actively seeking feedback at this stage; please share comments through the Data Savvy Courses Feedback Form.

Students may self-register based on an instructor’s recommendation or their own initiative and receive a portable micro-credential to add to their resume. The following courses are available:

The Data Literacy, Management & Sharing course helps researchers become more effective in finding, evaluating, using, and managing data and introduces ethical considerations around sharing and publishing data.

The Working with Data course takes researchers through the fundamentals of working with data, both quantitative and qualitative. It is designed to help students feel more confident about building, using, analyzing, and communicating with data.

The 2D and 3D Visualization course introduces the fundamentals of data visualization in both 2D and 3D formats. It reviews the properties of effective and common data visualization types, providing resources for creating visualizations and guidance on designing and evaluating them.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course walks students through geospatial concepts, data, resources, and tools at a high level.

These courses take a holistic approach to introducing key concepts of data literacy, data management, and data wrangling.
