Know Your Data Types: What Is My Kind of Data?

The first step in the Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan mandated by the 2023 NIH DMS policy (effective January 25, 2023) is to create a list of different data types your project will generate. Identifying these data types will have an impact on aspects like file formats, standards, metadata, and selecting a data repository. When determining your data types, it’s important to consider various factors. Attend this session to gain insight into the process of determining data types and structuring your DMS plan effectively.

Seonyoung Kim is a Senior Support Scientist at Bernard Becker Medical Library’s Data Management and Sharing Group. She provides DMS consultation services, including DMS Plan review, Repository Selection, Data Curation, Data Management and Sharing, and Data Interview. She is responsible for writing DMS-related blog posts, maintaining the BeckerDMS website, and curating content for Becker DMS newsletters. She has over 25 years of experience working in academic and industry research lab settings. She holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from the University of California, Irvine, and an MS/BS in Chemistry from Seoul National University.
