John Max Wulfing’s Passport to the Past

In conjunction with the current Newman Tower exhibit, John Max Wulfing’s Passport to the Past, Guest Curator Jeremy Haag will present an overview of Wulfing’s life through the lenses of travel and collecting. This presentation will take place at a meeting of the St. Louis Ancient Coin Study Group, and members of the public are welcome to attend.

John Max Wulfing was born in 1859 in St. Louis and was educated in both the United States and Germany before entering the family business and becoming a third-generation wholesale grocer. Although ostensibly a full-time businessman, his first loves were archaeology, numismatics, and the classics. In time, Wulfing formed multiple connections to WashU and ultimately donated an important ancient coin collection to the university.
