Documenting for Democracy: 60 Years of Kartemquin Films

Since 1966, Kartemquin Films has used documentary filmmaking to strengthen the bonds between communities and advocate for justice. Founded in Chicago and rooted in cinematic social inquiry, Kartemquin exemplifies the idea that a democratic society is a socially engaged one.

The Documenting for Democracy exhibition uses the Kartemquin Films Collection to reflect on the impact of the production house’s history, award-winning films, and achievements in the world of independent documentary filmmaking.

This exhibition was organized by Curator of Film and Media Lydia Creech with assistance from MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture (MFA-IVC) 2027 Candidate Maria Pellegrino.
