1984

Join WashU Libraries Virtual Book Club in celebrating Banned Books Week. This year, we will read 1984 by George Orwell.

Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching.

George Orwell’s 1984 has been banned or challenged primarily due to its intense political themes, explicit sexual content, and perceived “pro-communist” or “anti-government” messaging.

Book club will begin with a presentation on banned books, followed by a discussion of 1984.

Free and open to all, registration required for Zoom link.
