Changes to Overdue Fines, Renewals, and Lost Items in 2026

Starting in January 2026, WashU Libraries will eliminate daily fines on overdue books, journals, and media (such as DVDs and CDs). In addition, patrons will not need to log in to their account to request renewals – materials will automatically renew until renewals are exhausted (see loan period info for details) or if an item is recalled by another patron.

Fines and Fees Exceptions

Fines and fees will still be charged for:

  • Recalled books (another patron has requested the title): $3/day
  • Hourly items such as laptop chargers and course reserves: $1/hour
  • Daily items like day lockers and cameras: $3/day
  • Materials checked out from the Becker Medical Library or Law Library

All library materials, including those borrowed on Interlibrary Loan, must be returned when due. Library staff will not extend due dates or apply additional renewals. When an item is 28 days overdue, it will be considered lost, and lost item fees and policies will apply.

Lost and Damaged Items

Patrons will be billed a replacement fee of $175 when an item is 28 days overdue, returned with damage, or lost. Library privileges will also be suspended.

If an item is subsequently returned in good condition within 30 days of being billed, privileges will be restored, and replacement fees may be waived. Replacement copies will not be accepted in lieu of payment, and refunds will not be given if items are returned 30 days after payment.

Borrowing Periods and Limits Extended

WashU Libraries extended borrowing periods and loan limits at the start of the fall 2025 semester. This second phase of circulation changes aligns WashU with other research universities.
