Libraries Improve Database Finder Based on User Feedback

The Database Finder provides WashU with access to hundreds of academic research databases. The Libraries revised it after a usability study revealed opportunities for improvement.

This fall, students and faculty will have an easier time finding library databases that meet their research needs.

Database Finder improvements include:

  • Enhanced visibility of the search box and filters through borders and a magnifying glass icon
  • Clarification of the “Type” filter’s purpose by relabeling it “Type of Content”
  • Highlighting the “Clear Filters” feature by converting it to a button format
  • Prominent placement of a recommended database link below the search box
  • Improved linking to the Database Finder via Quick Search and the Libraries website search results.

Why Make These Changes

Libraries staff made these improvements in response to the findings of the Database Finder usability study. In this study, users were able to find databases by title, subject, and type. However, many had difficulty locating the Database Finder from the Libraries’ homepage. They also inconsistently recognized the tool’s Recommended Database link as a good starting point for general research. Most participants saw the need to remove filters before conducting a new search, but very few used the “Clear Filters” feature to do so. Instead, many participants deselected filters one by one.

Coffee, Snacks, and Usability Testing

UX Cafe

In spring 2025, Libraries staff conducted usability tests at two pop-up UX (User Experience) Cafés in Olin Library. Each test took 5-10 minutes and included an introduction, task performance, and follow-up questions about the ease of each task. Participants received coffee and snacks for their time and feedback.

To facilitate stakeholder participation, remote usability testing sessions were conducted with faculty participants. Twenty-eight undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff participated in the study.

To make sure the Database Finder is working as planned, Libraries staff plan to conduct a follow-up usability study at a UX Café in Olin Library this fall.
